We depart Monroe, NC on a downhill leg and a four lane divided highway.

The sheer joy and exhilaration of effortless pedaling, knocking out the miles, we enjoy one of the best riding days of our journey.  We are headed to a town named Fuquay-Varina.

Animal decides he has had enough of John and joins Chelsea on her bike where he can keep his eye on Joe.

Lane really outpaced himself by riding over 27 miles.  He was rewarded for his effort and performance by having a creek named for him in North Carolina.

When Lane queries his grandfather about the absence of an apostrophe in the name, Mike's only reply is,  "Well Lane, I guess you are up the creek without an apostrophe."

No, this is not Lanes Creek.  This is the Pee Dee River.  Joe surreptitiously slips a brick into Animal's backpack and suggests a swim.

Animal takes a moment to ingratiate himself with Sheila.  "If you go against me, you go against the flag," he mutters.  Sheila, like everyone else falls for the charms of the scraggly-one.

For the moment, all is well as we continue our journey.

And then disaster strikes...

Sheila and Chelsea see Joe, slowly turning blue, tongue hanging out, gasping for breath, in Animal's choke hold.  As they pull him off, Animal's only comment was, "I didn't do it and, even if I did, it wasn't my fault."

It seems like the name of every town in North Carolina, begins with Historic ________ (fill in the name here).  Aberdeen is no exception.

We continue our journey into Fuquay-Varina
