Leaving Ruston for the Mississippi River and on to Demopolis, Alabama, we continued our lonely journey down US Route 80.

In passing , we saw a myriad of local fauna and flora.  Aside from the many armadillos littering the highway, we saw a variety of muddy rivers, streams, and creeks.  At times, it felt like Jurassic Park.

Animal was confronted with a strange sight.  A mama goat with floppy ears.

"Hey John," he shouted.  "Was that goat part of the Louisiana Purchase?"

John, with his usual forbearance, just sighed in silence.

We were joined, on our ride with occasional friends, who shared our journey for just a little bit.  Our main goal for each day's ride is to meet and greet new friends along the way at A and W root beer float establishments'.  They don't believe it when we tell them that we have ridden all the way from California just to get a root beer float in the middle of Louisiana.

Finally, a great, big, muddy river.  We suspect that we are crossing the Mississippi.

Wanting to be sure, we checked with this couple from Opelika, Alabama.  They assured us that Joe has successfully navigated to the Mississippi.

"Big deal,"  quipped Animal.  "Anyone who heads east from California is going to cross the river at some point even if they don't have a clue whether or not they are in St Louis or New Orleans."

John, with his usual forbearance, continues to sigh in silence.

Here is Joe towering over John.  Mighty in stature... a giant among men.

A GIANT?        Joe sometimes needs a little extra help in the height department.

Arriving in Demopolis, Alabama we can smell the home fires of Montgomery.  Just two more days and we can all take a rest.
