We hit the road at first light this morning cycling south out of Deming, NM.  The road south was rough and bumpy but it wasn't long before we were back on our favorite road, US Route 9, heading east towards El Paso, Texas.

Contrary to popular belief, the southwestern desert of the United States is spectacular.

Despite a 12 to 14 MPH headwind, we put the truck in front while the two of us drafted behind.  Pure joy compared to the prospect of riding into the wind with our heads down. Of course, Janette was a bit apprehensive having two bikes tucked right behind her rear bumper.

While riding, we came upon one of those Killer Cows that are defended by the cattle guards that surround each town.  John, being the liberal easterner that he is, tried to approach the cow and make friends

Ole Bessy responded to John's friendly overture with a resounding sound of "PLOP!"  Rebuffed, John continued his trip eastward.

"Hey John," Animal called out, "How come there are no postcards for "Sanitary Fill, New Mexico or for that matter Resume Speed, Arizona???" John just shrugged his shoulders and continued his trip eastward.

We had a great riding day.  It was mostly downhill and the temperatures stayed below 111 until the very end.  We packed it up and headed into El Paso, Texas.

Thanks to the grace and generosity of Arturo Alvarez, our stay at the Hacienda Airport Travel Lodge in El Paso will be a memorable one.
