The day dawns early in Joe's life while he plans the ultimate in U-Turns. Using diverse astronomical, anatomical, and astrological charts, Joe plans a U-Turn to end all U-Turns. With this maneuver, he is assured of a place in the U-Turn Hall of Fame. As we approach the intersection to the assembly area, the moment is at hand. With Jim DeLong following, Joe makes what appeared to be a left turn. With great genius Joe continues his left turn and turns his maneuver into a U-Turn and an immediate turn into the assembly area. Unfortunately, Jim is left hanging in the middle of the intersection while Joe completes his turn, facing oncoming traffic who are certainly not appreciative of history in the making. Finally stopping in the assembly area behind Joe, Trish jumps out of the car, chasing poor hapless Joe, hoping to press her fingers around Joe's neck in abject admiration.
Surviving Trish's onslaught, Joe, along with Bill and Jim, are joined by Sandy Onofray, Mike Hauback, Deann Yates and Dr. Gin-Ming Hsu.
After barely avoiding a head on collision with a car leaving the facility, the riders joined by HealthSouth staff and supporters arrive at the HealthSouth. Notice that Joe is coming up in the world and is riding a real bike. The HealthSouth staff was forewarned of Joe's problems with directions and try to avoid all confusion by painting arrows on the pavement.
A wonderful group of patients were on hand to welcome the AAA traveling circus. By riding up to the facility on bicycles, the Amputees Across America message is not lost on the onlookers.
Tim Bugin, CEO welcomes the AAA trio of riders. Bill is eying the balloons in hopes of another performance by Ann. Nonetheless, the show goes on with each rider telling his story, followed by Rich Hoolanhan, a 2006 AAA rider, and a colorful Irishman of local renown.
The rest of the day was spent harassing and haranguing PT and OT personnel, personalizing posters for patients, and talking to patients in the PT gymnasium. Ambrose, one of the patients we visited, steals center stage. His wife and daughter prove that they have never been able to restrict his enthusiasm for life and people. And so ends three days of visitations at the three Greater Pittsburgh HealthSouth facilities. The efforts of Tim Bugin and Sharon Noro, CEOs, and the staff and patients who gave us such enthusiastic support made our visit particularly noteworthy, one that we will cherish for the rest of our ride. Of particular thanks to Ann Citolli for her good natured acceptance of our antics. Ann, we promise to return all of your personal items just as soon as we complete the shakedown of Bill. By the way, we found your earrings and glasses.
