A funny thing happened on the way to the facility today. We ran upon a truck hauling a sign promoting our visit to the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Altoona. So we flagged the driver down and he graciously pulled over and allowed us to have our picture made in front of his sign. We hope he was able to get the sign to its proper destination on time.
Here, the guys practice a new Olympic event, Synchronized Hand Waving. The timing was perfect, but Jim used the wrong hand again.
"OH MY!" This is a lovely picture of our support driver Janette as she travels behind our riders into the facility, protecting them from the wolves of the roadway. We can't tell you the number of times she has saved Joe's life as he swarps his way across America. Unfortunately, this is the only time she ever gets her picture on the net (bless her heart). It's a shame that these three dudes on bikes got in the way. Bill tries to stay to Joe's right so as not to be another victim of Wee-mo-sabe's weaving ways. Jim bites his lip in anticipation of being knocked into oncoming traffic. Joe is of course looking blindly to the right and not paying any attention to where he's going.
The fellers all make it on time and in no more than two pieces each. News of our visitation antics in the Pittsburgh area have gotten out and Altoona HealthSouth CEO, Scott Filler is shown going over rules and regulations for the intrepid three to follow at the facility today. Joe promises to keep Jim busy and out from behind all desks and off of all tables during our stay. Unaware of the new ground rules just put in place, Bill puts a bracelet and a necklace confiscated from Cynthia Watters into his back pocket while posing for the cameras. Cynthia doesn't even know what hit her yet.
Joe has a look of bewilderment on his face as the Jim Delong fan club shows up at yet another visitation. Unbeknownst to Joe, Jim slips each one a fresh $20 for their dedication which solidifies his position as fan favorite again. Trish is beginning to get a little concerned over the number of "femail" that Jim is getting while on the road and shows her displeasure by refusing to take any more pictures.
Bill is auditioning for a new looney tunes cartoon movie. His version of Elvis Presley's Blue Christmas in a Porky Pig voice captivates the local media.
After chants of "PORKY PRESLEY, PORKY PRESLEY", Bill returns to the stage to perform a stirring rendition of Hound Dog in the voice of Foghorn Leghorn.... "You ain't, I say, I say you ain't nothing but a houndog, Son". The crowd goes wild and Bill is saturated with eggs and tomatoes for his efforts.
Jim can't help but smile as two very lovely ladies whisper to him that they saw Joe wearing his pink biking shorts yesterday. It truly was a sight to behold. And as official members of the Jim Delong fan club, they express their desire to see Jim in them next. Who knows what tomorrow holds, ladies!
Joe is shown here badgering a witness.... er.... a patient. "Where were you on the night of December 5th, 1974????" Finally, after several minutes of casual conversation, Polly warms up to Joe's charms much to the amazement and chagrin of his traveling compatriots.
Jim talks with a patient while Cindy listens in. "Where do you keep your cash?", Jim asks.
Liz and Jim arm wrestle for loose change. Looking at the determination in Liz's eyes, we don't have to tell you who won.
Joe and Bill try their hand at arm wrestling with Liz but are defeated just as easily. We sing her praises and pose for a picture. We wish you the very best, Liz and we pray for a speedy recovery. Keep the faith and never give up.
Scott Filler presents the AAA group with a generous donation generated from numerous HealthSouth fund raising events and individual contributions which was far beyond our greatest expectations. Thanks to all who offered their services and contributions to make this possible.
Becky is presented with an Amputees Across America t-shirt due to her untiring efforts to help raise money for our cause. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and will go a long way, as we continue to reach out to folks who are facing various types of adversity in their lives, as we travel across these United States.
Today we had the privilege and honor to meet an outpatient named Bill. We want to wish him the very best and were impressed with the progress he has made to this point. We would love to see you meet any and all goals you have set for yourself during the coming year and we look forward to you joining our group at some point during the ride next year. The future is in your hands and only you can make your dreams come true. Stay positive, work hard and keep the faith.
Thanks to Scott Filler, CEO and Cindy Watters, DMO for their hard work and support which made our visit a success. Every aspect of the visit was first rate and we appreciate the prodigious efforts devoted to making our visit a success. Special thanks to Becky for all of her efforts on our behalf. The steak dinner with all of the fixins will long be remembered.
