Bill and Joe head down Topeka Boulevard in the wee morning hours. Just like the pony express, neither rain, snow, sleet or hail can slow these guys down! It's just starting to drizzle but they insist on riding! Bill is sad because the rain negates the need for a water pistol.
As the rain continues to fall, our guys stop to check out a building for sale. Perhaps this would be a nice place to put in a Starbucks or an A&W Rootbeer stand?!?!?! Joe, who is up at 4:00 every morning, is ready for his early morning power nap and nearly falls off his bike as his head begins to nod. Bill suggests they stop for a few minutes to dry off and catch some zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's.
Bill works quickly and props Joe's bike up against him to keep him from sleeping on the ground. Despite the rain, a bad day on the bike is still a good day and the guys still manage a big smile.
Bruce introduces "Old Blue" to Bill, "This is what a bike looks like that's already traveled across these United States. It practically pedals itself." Bruce offers to trade his icon of a bike for Bill's newer, but cheaper heap of metal (in Bruce's words), but Bill suspects foul play (or is it FOWL play) and balks on the trade. So Bruce tapes the mirror back on Old Blue, airs up the tires and takes off the training wheels as we prepare to head to the Mid American HealthSouth facility for our afternoon visitation.
As we prepare to ride into the HealthSouth facility, we are escorted by the Overland Park Fire Department. They were able to distract most folks away from the fact that Bill's parole is up and he now is on the most wanted list in Kansas for various dastardly deeds such as shooting fellow cyclists with an overpowering squirt gun.
We head out in a near perfect formation. Joe tries to crowd Bruce off the road at the last second.
Despite the old professor's antics, Bruce finds a way to make the turn and we make our way towards the entrance of the facility without incident.
An eager crowd awaits the riders as they pull in amid cheers and well wishers.
The riders along with patients and staff of HealthSouth pose for a picture on the front lawn. The rain holds off for the afternoon and we all are appreciative of the fine reception given to us.
Bill speaks with Eileen and her husband, Bill.
Joe talks with Mark who is a courageous young man facing many adversities but continues to show great strength and fortitude. Keep the faith Mark.
Bruce is shown here trying to buy votes for the county dog catcher and promises to reduce taxes if elected. Most think he's barking up the wrong tree. Anybody seen his backpack yet?
Bill secretly tells another man that Bruce's backpack is actually on his back. The man gets a good chuckle out of it all, but Bruce is heartbroken over the alleged loss.
The guys continue to woo and awe the crowd as they move inside. Bruce is now promising more jobs if elected.
Joe tries to interest the crowd in some stories of his childhood, back when he roamed the streets as an evil gypsy selling potions and salves for a living. The crowd shows little concern and ignores his swindling ways and head in doors.
Bruce is now back in the truck looking for his backpack.
Bruce finally makes his way back and invokes the wisdom of the old professor in finding his backpack. Joe begins to shake down each patient to see if they've stowed it away.
Here the guys sign posters for the group as Dan of Hanger Prosthetics works with Joe on his spelling. Bruce refuses to sign any more posters until somebody produces his backpack.
Bill is shown here asking the crowd for donations in order to fund his new dentures.
Deborah Brown talks with Bill in a candid moment. We wish you the very best.
Joe tries to sweet talk Mary into loaning him her wheelchair. Mary reluctantly agrees to pose for the picture, but intentionally covers up Joe's face in the poster.
"Hey Mike, have you seen my backpack? I was sure I laid it back here somewhere!"
Kathy leans on Bill for support during a PT session. Bill pretends to give her a smooch on the ear and takes in her ear ring. Another successful snatching in the books. Meanwhile, Bill finds Bruce's backpack hidden behind Kathy!!! She swears she doesn't know how it got there!!!
As we travel to the Katy trail for our ride to Jefferson City, we feel a strong sense of gratitude for all that Kristin Dehart, CEO, did for us to make our visit so successful. Also special thanks to Tiffany Wood-Kiehl for all of her efforts to organize the event. Our thanks to the staff of HealthSouth Mid America Rehab Hospital and for the care they give to their patients. Finally, thanks to DoubleTree Hotels for providing us our rooms,
You are a great hospital and a great team.
