Annie gets up very early and does Cliff's laundry, brings him his breakfast in bed, packs and hauls eighteen bags of Cliff's stuff down to the car, cleans Cliff's windscreen, loads Cliff's bike, and with great humility and numerous bows of obeisance, asks Cliff's permission to ride just a little ways on the bicycle. Cliff, wonders aloud if Annie has really done anything for him to warrant such an unusual request. But a perfect husband to a fault, Cliff confers his permission for Annie to ride.
Cliff ponders how he can ride a bicycle that is pointed in the wrong direction. He first mounts it facing to the rear but is unable to get his hands on the handlebars to steer. He tries it facing forward, but soon discovers that doing so puts him farther and farther and farther from his destination. Cliff is finally going to rely on a higher power than he, and following his 6:30, 6:31, 6:33, 6:39, 6:59PM ablutions, calls on whasisname Annie to come and bail him out. Annie does so with her usual efficiency while Cliff takes notes on how to turn the bike should he ever be faced with this insolvable dilemma again.
Annie finally gets to put some miles on her bike and
retires to the car to drive while Abel reprograms his leg's computer to
interface with the GPS on Joe's computer.
Finally ready to go, Cliff and Abel attack the hills. Abel, sporting some new high performance tires, cannot wait to pile up the miles at a high rate of speed. Unfortunately, the tire is only guaranteed for 5 miles and after an exhilarating 7 mile ride, the tire became flat and out of warranty.
There being no greater thrill than riding a bicycle on its rim, Abel toughs out another 300 feet before he and Cliff call it a day and journey to a bike shop for a fresh supply of bicycle tires.
Undaunted, we arrive in Shreveport, leaving Texas and the rains behind us..
