Before we could get started with our visit to Scottsdale HealthSouth we had to take care of a minor issue. Last night, our truck had some problems and had to be towed in to the nearest Ford dealership. The gracious people at HealthSouth sent a van to pick us up and we got on with business as usual.

Upon picking up the truck at the end of the day, the mechanic that worked on the truck explained what he found. He said that he found desert rattlesnake in the engine which caused a pulley on the air conditioner compressor to malfunction which caused a flywheel to stop turning that led to the power steering to go out that preceded the air conditioning failing (in 107 degree heat, we might add) which ended up ticking off one hot, sticky princess and two stinky, sweaty boys. All this because of one darn rattlesnake that was probably picked up during our misadventure in the desert which was, obviously, caused by the GPS system that Joe just LOVES. All problems eventually will come around to being Joe’s fault.

Luke and AJ rode in to the Scottsdale HealthSouth today with Karen  Christiana (DMO) and Matt while Abel got to ride in a luxurious, air-conditioned van. Abel managed to hop out in just enough time to snap a few pictures of AJ and Luke huffing and puffing their way into the facility.

Matt seemed as though he’d make us look bad so AJ convinced him to just push his bike with his feet. Meanwhile, Luke tried to run Karen off the road. Boy, these riders sure can’t stand to come in second place.

Here AJ teaches a patient how to make Little Bunny Foo Foo run through the forest and pop the field mice on the head.

AJ loses in a game of musical chairs to another bilateral amputee. As she walked away she was heard mumbling, “I liked playing Little Bunny Foo Foo better. It was cool. Musical chairs is dumb. I’m taking my chair and going home.”

The Mayor of Scottsdale, Mary Manross, greets Luke and Abel. When she got wind that AJ was calling her the Chick Mayor again, she immediately vacated the premises. AJ is still happy that she’s representing for the girls!

Melinda forgets what is going on and bursts out into a karaoke version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters. She’s very into Simon and Garfunkel. It’s all about the mini-afro.

Since it’s karaoke day, Abel decides to sing La Cucaracha. We all think he’s trying to show off that he knows Spanish. Luke thinks that singing about a cockroach isn’t very impressive

AJ, never wanting to be outdone, belts out her extremely southern version of Georgia On My Mind while everyone cringes. A dog was heard howling in the background

Luke, not knowing any songs other than Thank God I’m a Country Boy, gets ready to sing but chokes underneath the pressure. Instead, he decided to show everyone how to do the Electric Slide dance.

Jerry, being 3 days older than dirt, can’t remember any songs so he talks for 2 hours and 39 minutes about how to field day the heads and how to speak using accurate Navy terminology. He mentioned something about scuttlebutts and geedunks but we think everyone had already left by the time he got to that part.

It was very SWEET of the Scottsdale HealthSouth to have a cake made in honor of the riders.

Here’s the proof that Luke eats every 10 seconds. Just for lunch today he snarfed down 48 ribs, 4 ears of corn, 9 pieces of cheesecake, and 3 LARGE pieces of chocolate cake. He closed down the kitchen and started a riot among the patients that hadn’t eaten yet. We may not be invited back next year.

Brad, one of our biggest fans, rode down to support us today on his three-wheeler. He is a great example of how not to give up. We’ve also heard that he’s the neighborhood flirt. Keep it up, Brad!

Stacey, Luke, and AJ pose for a picture while Cheryl, tired of their antics with her patient, tries to wish them away in true genie style. Poof! Be gone!

Bridget and Megan take a moment away from torture—whoops, therapy---for a recent knee replacement. Keep up the hard work, Bridget!

Shane survived a plane crash with burns to his legs but, thankfully, no broken bones. He has a great attitude and can’t wait to get home to the family that misses him very much. We were all very impressed with his character and work ethic and hope he makes a full recovery!

Hazel and Jane have a special bond that forms between a therapist and patient. You can easily see that they are more than just patient and therapist, they’re also friends.
