Ride to Tucson

The day started with an early morning visit to Fremont Jr. High School in Mesa, Arizona. Abel’s son, Eric, invited us to come and talk to the kids taking part in a summer program. We had a great time discussing what we’re doing with AAA and also about the ups and downs of being an amputee. The students surprised us with a number of great questions and most all of them laughed at AJ’s jokes. Thanks for having us.

Can you believe that these two precious angels have part of Abel’s genes? He was very happy to have a few evenings in Phoenix to visit with them and his son and daughter-in-law.

As you can see by the ever-so-slight incline, Joe told yet another fib. We never found the “all downhill route” that he claimed we would enjoy while riding to Tucson today.

Luke races ahead of AJ shortly after she started her earsplitting rendition of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain complete with “toot toots,” “pull backs,” and “yee haws”. You’d think that she sings like a half-dead dodo bird judging by how fast Luke and Abel try to get away. Honestly, is it really THAT bad?

Abel promised Luke a nice longneck today. Luke was very disappointed, however, when he found out that Abel meant an ostrich.

AJ is lost in thought in the middle of the sweltering heat. She’s decided to try to rig the truck with a karaoke system so the guys can enjoy her singing all day long.

Abel couldn’t resist taking a moment to hang out with the locals. He said they reminded him of Joe.

After Abel plopped AJ out into the immense heat and right at the foot of a small mountain range, all she could think about was making it to that Dairy Queen. When the boys were busy watching all the hot chicks at the RV park, AJ dropped her bike and made off with a trucker named Rusty. She was last seen washing his truck with a Blizzard in her hand.
