Mason chases down his dad and makes a quick move to pass him. He took that opportunity to swipe a crisp $5 bill from his dad’s pocket and rode off into the park to find the nearest Sno-Cone vendor.

Luke, upon being interviewed by Channel 13, denies any knowledge of swiping food from a group of hikers that left their tent for the day. He did appear to have eaten but there were no incriminating crumbs on his person. The matter is left open for investigation.

We were joined today by some local amputee riders and supporters, HealthSouth Rehab Hospital of Colorado Springs staff, two motorcycle policemen, one little brother (Ethan), a prosthetist, and a Paralympic cyclist named Greta. Thanks for making our ride in one to remember!

Luke, Casey, and Greta zip into the HealthSouth facility. Luke, not to be outdone in front of his hometown crowd, tries to buzz in before Greta. What Luke doesn’t know, though, is that Greta had already lapped him twice. AJ is nowhere to be found.

Lisa (HealthSouth of Colorado Springs DMO) and Greta pose for the Summer ’08 Edition of Hot Legs Magazine

Abel asks a HealthSouth staff member to try and fetch him the latest edition of Hot Legs Magazine.

Luke, uninterested in Hot Legs Magazine, asks a staff member to try and find him a copy of Fishin’ Girls Magazine.

AJ looks up abruptly when someone recognizes her from the latest edition of Motorcycle Mama magazine. It seems as though Snake may have tracked her down again.

Steven and his wife pose with AJ for a photo. Steven, a young veteran, has lived through a full-body infection, a heart transplant, having a child, and an above-knee amputation. He truly defines what a real survivor is. Perhaps we’ll be seeing more of Steven next year *wink, wink*!

Luke and Mandy (a local prosthetist extraordinaire) can’t help but to break out in a full grin. Mandy smiles because she knows Luke is going away to school soon. Luke is smiling because he heard the dinner bell ring.

AJ gets caught trying to show the girls how to play the Georgia shell game. The girls are smiling because they know that the jig is up for AJ who just won both of their paychecks but will now have to give them back.

Luke is disappointed because Lisa just informed him that the bell he heard ring was the dinner-over bell and not the dinner-is-ready bell.

The staff of Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs welcomes back one of their former patients who lived to tell of the horrors of physical and occupational therapy. They made him a sign in order to try and butter him up so he won’t tell the current patients what is in store for them.

Lucy, a recent above-knee amputee and a 5th grade teacher, talks shop with AJ about both amputations and teaching. Lucy is working hard to learn the skills she’ll need to carry on her life as usual. With the work she’s putting in and her great attitude, she’ll be up and walking in no time at all!

Eat your heart out, Joe! Notice that Abel is not on tiptoe but is able, nonetheless, to touch the ceiling. Can you do that, Joe???

Our thanks go out to Lisa Hinton DMO and the staff and patients at HealthSouth Rehab who went far beyond our expectations to provide us with a great event.  Your support and generosity reflects in everything you do for us and for the patients, reflects in the loving care given every day of the year.
