Amber (AJ) Johnson, has changed a lot since completing the AAA ride as a BK in 2006. She is now 32 years old and teaches 3rd grade in Macon, Ga and has been a double amputee since March 2008. A left leg amputee for 6 years and a right leg amputee for 1 ½ years, AJ’s crowning achievement was learning to ride a bike---and walk---last summer while on the ride. After numerous introductions to the blazing hot pavement all across the country, AJ has finally learned to keep her bike mostly upright and her legs on her body while continuing to teach 3rd graders and wrangle her two wild Westies way down south in Georgia. If you can understand her through her thick southern drawl, you’ll find that she has some insanely funny stories to tell about her many experiences as an amputee but, more importantly, she has a great ear for listening and supporting those who are facing physical challenges that life has thrown their way. AJ is a firm believer that anyone can find a way to make life worth living with whatever gifts they’ve been given. Most people don’t think that having two feet amputated is a great gift but she refuses to see her physical challenges as anything other than an immense opportunity to show people what living is all about.
