Unfortunately, Doc was unable to procure coffee prior to our arrival at Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital of Topeka. Not being his usual perky self, he grumbled his way into the facility and asked everyone along the way to point him in the direction of the nearest working coffee pot.

AJ impresses Chuck, Kim, and Tim with her operatic version of “Chattanooga Choo Choo.”

Mary whips AJ into shape for a proper picture. A former marine from the 1940’s, Mary wouldn’t take anything less than tip top and required AJ to be appropriately tucked and smoothed prior to the photo being taken.

Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital’s CEO, Mark LeNeave, officiates the pickup wheelchair basketball game between the Kansas Wheelhawks and Rehab employees. Mark made sure that the employee team played their best by carrying around a cup of cold water that he’d pour on the head of anyone that shot a brick or missed a foul shot.

We’d like to say thanks to the Kansas Wheelhawks for coming out today and braving the staggering temperature and blistering sun just for us! You guys are #1 in our book!

Chris Thompson, Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital of Topeka’s DMO, looks a tad distressed when one of the Wheelhawks turns up the heat and gives him the “Tater Tot Special.” (Sorry, Tater Tot—we had to do it.)

Chris’ shot stinks so badly that even he has to hold his nose. Better luck next time, Chris.

Abel misunderstood what his duties as the waterboy entailed. He mistakenly thought that it meant he could get as many cold waters as he wanted while the players suffered from dehydration in the boiling sun.

After the HealthSouth visit, Chris arranged for the AAA riders to visit the local VA hospital where they met some hard-working veterans. We are so blessed to have been able to spend a short period of time with these men and wish them all the very best!

Thank you to Chris Thompson, DMO and Mark LeNeave, CEO—for all of their efforts to make our visit a great success.  We are always humbled by the intensity and dedication of the Wheelhawks and are always appreciative of the huge efforts of HealthSouth in providing such wonderfully loving care to each and every one of their patients.  Thanks HealthSouth for letting us be a part of that effort.
