Departure from HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tustin

Another year begins with the traditional bike wetting ceremony where we trash one of the bikes by dunking it in the ocean. My gosh alive, wouldn't you know, that Dick, in absentia, volunteered his bike for this purpose. What a guy. We actually discovered that his bike was so light that it actually floated despite being covered in thick sewage sludge. Hurry back Dick Fate. We miss you.

As shown here, Abel is not very happy about the warrants being served for his abominable behavior last year. Clustered around him are all of the law enforcement officers and probation officers who have attested to Abel's redemption. Sandra Yule, the new CEO, pictured in the last row, second from the right is not so sure that letting Abel loose around her patients is a very good idea. Fortunately, Joe's stella behavior sets a great standard to which Abel wishes to aspire and everyone actually believes him.

John Cool delivers a rousing inspirational speech to the patients of HealthSouth. Joe, our narcoleptic rider, is ecstatic and demonstrates great enthusiasm before taking his daily power nap.

As seen here, Abel brings the crowd to their feet for a standing (err... maybe sitting) ovation after he performs a musical rendition of his life story with a few sea chanties thrown in for good measure. Jane keeps pinching her oxygen supply hose shut hoping for some relief.

Abel reacquaints himself with Paige Looney who wonders why a man as old as her great, great, great, great grandfather is not sitting on a porch somewhere, watching the grass grow. Notice Abel's chest spectacles which allows him to gaze fondly at his own feet and other anatomical parts south of his beltline (like knees and ankles).

Arturo is accosted by John, who wants to trade his hat for his Flash Gordon costume. Art is not having anything to do with John and tells John, in so many words, to kiss off. John sweetens the deal and promises that he will get Art's sentence reduced for good behavior. As Art is part of a sting operation, he confiscates John's bag of a white sugary substance only to discover that John's bag of a white surgary substance is really only a bag of a white sugary substance commonly known as white sugar. Though this gets John off the hook with Art, the presence of an angry crowd of drug dealers wanting to talk with John does not bode well.

Joe tries to convince Jane Kibby that the air in the balloons is much purer that the oxygen she is breathing. Joe wants to borrow her oxygen tank to help him keep up with the two adolescent riders he rides with. Jane relents and allows Joe to fill the balloons with oxygen.

Fortified with his balloons, Joe is able to stay ahead of Paige as she chases him down for being so mean to Abel. The balloons would have worked for Joe but he developed a severe latex reaction on his lips from sucking on the balloons and was finally cornered by Paige.

Despite Joe's behavior, characterized by some as being Mother Theresa-like, and mainly because of the antics of John and Abel, who repeatedly insulted and otherwise abused everyone they talked with, Tustin's finest were called in to escort the boys from AAA out of town.

We start our ride from the top of the mountain on Route 78 at the 4,500 foot elevation. Joe on Big Red, sans brakes, nervously takes the lead and sets a speed record for the downhill while screaming and frantically squeezing both brake levers to little avail. John and Abel both display evil grins as Joe's screams epithets of joy at John and Abel. Both just grin.

After 7 miles down a curvy 6 percent grade, John and Abel take the lead as Joe struggles with his bike which doesn't come out of high gear. John and Abel just grin.

Three happy faces as we complete the ride for Day One and arrive in El Centro. Our thanks to Sandra Yule, CEO and Lee Fallon, DMO, for putting up with our antics. Your hospitality was gracious and we hope that you don't actually press charges against John and Abel. Thanks also to your staff who do a magnificant job each and every day to assure your patients the highest quality of care.
